Good News, Relocation Edition

Well it has happened. Bronco Chase is moving up in the world. As of today, Monday, January 24, 2011, I have been hired by the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello to be the sports page designer and eventually a writer. I am really excited to begin a career doing exactly what I want to be doing. The sports editor, Jay Heater, has plenty of experience both in writing and reporting. There is a lot that I can learn from him, which is something that I am really looking forward to accomplishing.

A lot of times in the journalism industry it is hard to get your foot in the door. But once you do, if you are talented and ambitious, there are plenty of opportunities to move up. I hope to be able to do just that.

As I move my family to Eastern Idaho (with my extensive Boise State Bronco wardrobe in tow), I will ponder and appreciate the blessing that this new opportunity is in my life. At the same time, I will be covering and reporting everything Idaho State Bengal-related. We will see what that does for me. I am excited to spend many evenings roaming the sidelines of football and basketball games, both high school and college. Let's go Bengals?!

This is the stadium where the games are played. It is called Holt Arena. At least it's better than that barn up in Moscow!

In terms of the blog and what that will mean for posts, I am not sure what it means. It is still up in the air. Bronco Chase may have to shut down entirely for the time being, or I will produce fewer posts that come out only when things are most important. It will all be figured out in no time. Until then, enjoy this very, very, crude/poorly done head shot of me that will appear in the Idaho State Journal next to a column of mine at one point or another (well, a better, more professional head shot will be printed).

In other news, the East-West Shrine Game took place on Saturday and four Boise State players were involved; Ryan Winterswyk, Winston Venable, Jeron Johnson, and Brandyn Thompson. Venable stole the show and impressed many people. I would love to see him blowing someone up on the NFL level. Oh, and some fool from Idaho played.

Anyway, make sure you check back in and see what else Bronco Chase has in store.

How is Boise State's Football Cupboard Looking?

I apologize for yesterday's rant on the hypocrisy of the NCAA. I get really worked up sometimes. Wait a second, I don't apologize at all. I am not sorry for what I said. I mean it and will forever feel like that. I am fully aware that there is not much a 25 year-old guy from Twin Falls can do to bring about an enormous change in college football, but that still won't stop me from trying! Let's get back to familiar territory and talk Bronco football! As I mentioned a couple of days ago, there are a few questions regarding Boise State football that need to be answered. I took care of one before the Sugar Bowl-induced interruption of yesterday, so let's hit another one now.

Who will replace Boise State's departing seniors and how effective will they be?

I tend to get a little bit anxious about these types of thoughts. It was the same way when Legedu Nanee, Drisan James, Ryan Clady, Jerard Rabb, Jeremy Childs, and Ian Johnson all left. I retain comfort knowing that all of those players were replaced by the likes of Austin Pettis, Titus Young, Nate Potter, and Doug Martin. In other words, Boise State knows how to recruit and will get the job done.

There are a lot of great players on the departing list, as you already know. I understand that it will be impossible to find someone with hands like Austin Pettis. Titus Young's speed is unparalleled. Nobody scares the pants off of Fresno State quarterbacks like Winston Venable. Yes, this was a fantastic class, one of the best to play on The Blue. Remember, Coach Petersen is one of the hottest, most coveted coaches in the nation for a reason. Also, football is amazing because great minds who teach and train these players (like Coach Pete!) can twist, change, mold, form, tweak, cater, and alter an offensive or defensive scheme to fit the players that are currently on the roster. Petersen and his staff are experts at doing just that. Example: Vinny Perretta was a triple threat. He could catch, throw, and run, and he did all three on a consistent basis. There were plays and variations of plays based on his unique skill set. With Kellen at the helm, the offense is tailored to fit his pocket-passing strengths. Do you ever see him running the option (I think I remember seeing it once, but only once)? Joe Southwick, on the other hand, will run the option consistently when he gets a hold of the reigns of the offense.

Next year, you will see a lot more of Doug Martin and (hopefully) a healthy DJ Harper. They will be the feature of the offense because they are both really talented and the absence of Young and Pettis will make it so. I wouldn't even be surprised to see a lot more use of the pass-catching tight ends and Chris Potter running the wildcat as a run/pass option (much like Vinny Perretta did). With that said, let's go over who will possibly replace the above mentioned seniors.

~Austin Pettis - Aaron Burks - Let's hope he can learn how to catch like Mr. Pettis. Maybe we can even surgically attach Austin's sticky hand to Burks' arms. Come on science! Help us out here! Tyler Shoemaker is also an option to move from the third option receiver to prime time as number 1 or 2.

~Brandyn Thompson - Ebo Makinde - Not only does he have a sweet name (his real one is Ebeneezer), but he was a good recruit for the Broncos. It's time to step up.
Jerrell Gavins, Antwon Murray, and Quaylon Ewing are also options. There is a four-star CB recruit named Stefan McClure that is still considering Boise State. It's a long shot that he will come here, but if he did he would get a good look at starting as a freshman.

~Daron Mackey - JC Percy was already starting due to the fact that Mackey was constantly injured. Percy will stay there. Look for freshman Blake Renaud to make some noise in spring ball.

~Darrell Acrey - Byron Hout was already the starter before he got injured. He should re-assume that role next season. The primary backups will be Tommy Smith and Allen Mooney.

~Jarvis Hodge - Matt Kaiserman, Jay Ajayi - the question here is who will be the third string, garbage time running back. Ajayi is really good, but I don't know if the coaches will want to burn his red shirt.

~Jason Robinson - Cedric Febis - Robinson was the back up and Febis, a special teams stand out, will replace him in that role.

~Jeremy Avery - DJ Harper - He will be back and I sure hope he stays healthy. He is a great running back. Raphiel Lambert is an option as well. It's too bad that Malcolm Johnson crapped out. He was a great recruit for the Broncos.

~Jeron Johnson - Jeremy Ioane - I am really excited about this kid. He chose Boise State over Washington and Notre Dame. There is a lot expected from him and I think he will deliver.

~Kevin Sapien - ? - Sapien called it quits after the Fiesta Bowl last year due to some serious nagging injuries. He helped coach on the sidelines. His presence and personality might be missed, but that's about it.

~Kyle Brotzman - Jimmy Pavel or Jake Van Ginkel - The Van Ginkel kid has not committed yet, but is seriously considering the Broncos. Trevor Harman is also a legitimate option.

~Matt Slater - Brenel Meyers - Meyers started at the Fiesta Bowl. The Broncos have a pretty deep offensive line rotation. Other names that will be considered are Charles Leno and Faraji Wright.

~Mike Coughlin - Joe Southwick - Coughlin and Southwick were already co-back ups. Grant Hedrick will get a look as well.

~Ryan Winterswyk - Tyrone Crawford - As a back up this last season, Crawford was named a third-team all American. He is an absolute beast and will wreak plenty of havoc next year. Don't overlood Sam Ukwuachu or Robert Ash either. Boise State's D-Line is really deep.

~Sean King - ? - King never even saw the field. There is not much to replace here.

~Titus Young - Geraldo Hiwat - He has the speed. Let's see if he can hold on to the ball. Also, if Matt Miller can recover from his ruptured achilles, he could see some action as well.

~Tommy Gallarda - Gabe Linehan - When Gallarda got hurt, Boise State's run game took a hit. He was a great blocker and good at catching touchdowns in the red zone. Linehan played well this year when he saw the field. If he can work on his blocking, he will get the nod. Don't forget Chandler Koch or Kyle Sosnowski.

~Will Lawrence - Faraji Wright - This one is a toss up. There are any number of players that could take this spot.

~Winston Venable - Dextrell Simmons - Simmons is a JuCo transfer from Blinn College in Texas. He was a great pick up for Boise State. Don't overlook hard-hitting Jonathan Brown either.

So there you have it. I am not too worried about the replacements. Boise State's recruiting has improved considerably since they started winning Fiesta Bowls. The team is in good hands and I look forward to another great year. The offense will change, of course, but it is nothing to lose sleep over. Go Broncos!

Weekly Player to Watch, 11th Edition

I cannot believe that we have already reached the regular season finale. I get so excited when college football starts and then it pains me deeply when it ends. Despite the setback last week at Nevada, Boise State has a lot going for them for the remainder of this season, including the bowl game, and for years to come. The final game of the season pits the erratic Utah State Aggies against our beloved Boise State Broncos on The Blue. According to reports, the Broncos are focused, having fun, and ready to play this game. That is good to hear. Tomorrow will be extra special because it is senior day. We will say farewell to 18 student-athletes who have been part of the most productive and winning classes in Boise State history. Tom Scott on ktvb.com has a great tribute to the seniors as well as staggering numbers and statistics for what they have accomplished in their 4-5 years on The Blue.

Today's Weekly PTW will be different. I am going to honor this great group of seniors individually. I will mention each one by name and share a fun fact about them. They are in alphabetical order. Please enjoy!

Austin Pettis

Boise State record holder for most career catches and most touchdowns in a season. Enough said. He will be sorely missed.

Brandyn Thompson

Named Defensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl after nabbing 2 interceptions (one of them was a pic-six) and tipping another pass that Winston Venable intercepted to seal the victory. Also, he's my little sister's favorite player.

Daron Mackey

His career has been hampered by knee injuries, but Mackey has contributed when he is on the field. He is aggressive and ferocious out there.

Derrell Acrey

Acrey is a vocal team leader, pumping up his teammates before each game. This includes when he was a redshirt freshman at the first Fiesta Bowl. "The Preacher" is a fitting nickname for him.

Jarvis Hodge

Has a really good time mowing down defenders in mop up time. I enjoy watching him as well!

Jason Robinson

Was the key factor/player in calling the fake punt against TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.

Jeremy Avery

This little guy runs tough and has the moves to fake out defenders. Even when he was relegated to a back-up, he kept his head up and returned to the backfield as happy as he could be. Jeremy is a great player and is very underrated in Boise State history.

Jeron Johnson

Jeron hits really hard. I mean really hard. He is ferocious out there. Just ask Russell Hill.

Kevin Sapien

Also part of the offensive line last season that yielded a mere 5 sacks. His shoulder injuries sidelined him for good, but is used as a coach and mental leader.

Kyle Brotzman

Kyle has scored 425 career points. That is most in Boise State and WAC history. He is also closing in on the record books for most in NCAA history. Just remember the fake punt against TCU. It was beautiful!

Matt Slater

Another anchor in the Boise State offensive line that gives up very few sacks. He is also on the all-WAC academic team, so he's a smart kid as well.

Mike Coughlin

Mike was named Scout Team Offensive Player of the year for Boise State in 2006. He has been a huge leadership factor and model for Kellen Moore and the whole team.

Ryan Winterswyk

Transformed from a walk-on safety to a multiple-year first team all-WAC selection and all-WAC-Decade selection. That is amazing. He is one of the true leaders on defense.

Sean King

Sean is a local kid from Timberline High School, living the dream with the Broncos.

Titus Young

Boise State record holder for most receiving yards. Second for most receptions (behind fellow senior Austin Pettis). He is also the fastest freaker I have ever seen on a football field. Welcome to the NFL Mr. Young!

Tommy Gallarda

Tommy's one-handed catch for a touchdown against Virginia Tech was the sickest thing I have seen in a really long time.

Will Lawrence

Will started all 13 games last year. You know, the offensive line that only gave up 5 sacks, which was the lowest total in the nation!

Winston Venable

Basically, he's a beast. He plays very physical and even finds time to intercept the ball on occasion. I like him a lot!

Let's send off our seniors with a loud round of applause on Saturday and wish them the best as they move on. I hope that all of them get to start as well. Make sure you check back in on Sunday for my take on the game against Utah State. Let's go Broncos!

Boise State Dominates Fresno; They Had no Chance

I had little doubt that the Broncos were going to win the game, but the way in which it was accomplished blew my mind. The first quarter looked like Boise State was going to be this week's TCU, and possibly fall in the polls and blow their chance for a big bowl game. But the Boys in (Orange)shook it off and blew up for 48 points in the remaining 3 quarters. Kellen Moore didn't even play much of the fourth quarter and they still blew out the Bulldogs. Here are some stats to chew on;

Yardage:
......Broncos......Bulldogs
Rushing-125...........49
Passing-391...........76
..Total-516...........125

Average Gain Per Play:
......Broncos......Bulldogs
........6.3...........2.5

Yards Per Pass Play:
......Broncos......Bulldogs
........9.3...........3.2

First Downs:
......Broncos......Bulldogs
........31.............9

Third Down Attempts/Completions-%:
......Broncos......Bulldogs
.....10/13-77%......1/12-8%

Number of sacks on opposing quarterback:
......Broncos......Bulldogs
.........4.............0

If you thought the win over Hawai'i was dominant, it was even better tonight. The way that Boise State played last night was nothing short on insane. Fresno State averages 34 points and 400 yards a game, so holding them to 0 and 125 is incredible. Their bread and butter has been the running game under the small but capable shoulders of Robbie Rouse. That kid was basically non-existent. He finished with 70 yards on 17 carries, 37 of which came in the final drive of the game against the Broncos' 2nd and 3rd stringers. The Broncos more than quadrupled the Bulldogs' total yardage output. The one that stands out the most to me is the average yards per pass completion. They nearly got a first down every single time they passed the ball. It helped that Titus Young was burning that tool of a football player Desia Dunn (number 24). Just like the yardage differential, the difference in first downs is quite impressive. The Broncos had a great third down conversion percentage, something that they improved on greatly from last week. Even better, they only allowed Fresno State to convert 1 of 12 third downs. Finally, Boise State found themselves in the Bulldog backfield all night, terrorizing an already shaking quarterback in Ryan Colburn. 4 sacks is great, but they also didn't give up any. Kellen Moore should have been sacked 3 times, but managed to escape each time. As my little sister said, "I think he's a Jedi."

What We Learned:

The orange jerseys look awesome! At least they do in person. I heard from a few people that they looked nasty on TV. But being at the stadium when they came out in full uniform, it was, shall I say, breathtaking. They did look pretty cool. I hope to see them again in the future.

Desia Dunn is a complete tool. It seems like this section is turning into a place for me to call out losers from the other teams. Last week was Shiloh Keo and this week is Mr. Dunn, number 24. I counted 3 pass interference penalties on him alone. Oh, and don't forget the face that he continually talked junk all game even though he Titus Young was beating him like a rented mule all night long. Good thing we like to talk with our play.

Boise State has some sort of spell over Fresno State. In the few days before the game, their head coach continued to heap praise on the Broncos and say how good they are and how tough they are to beat. What do you think/say if you are one of his players and you hear him gushing over your next opponent like that? It seems that Pat Hill's man crush on the Broncos is doing nothing but allowing his team to get destroyed by them every year. Boise State has their number for sure.

Boise State's secondary is no longer a concern. Not that they ever really were, but without question they are a force on this defense. So think about it now; the Bronco D-line is one of the best in the country and so is their secondary, where is the weakness? I guess you would have to say the linebacking unit, especially with the loss of Byron Hout. But even then they stuffed the Fresno rushing threat all night.

If there is a better receiving duo in the United States than Pettis and Young, I have yet to see it. They are so good together. Combine that with the fact that Kellen Moore isn't human and you have an offense that is impossible to stop. They combined for 18 catches, 257 yards, and all four of Kellen's touchdown passes. That is impressive. So who do you stick your shutdown corner on? Even if neither are open, Tyler Shoemaker or a tight end will be. Basically, you're defense is screwed. Fresno State's coach Pat Hill said this about them; "Those two wide receivers, you were bringing up the SEC. Who in the SEC has two like that? I don't think anybody does." I agree coach.

The referees were terrible.
Beyond any calls that I thought were bad or not right (my opinion, obviously), I have never seen a game so disorganized and out of sorts from the officials side as I did last night. They looked like clueless, incompetent inbreeds running around the blue turf in black ninja masks. It was frustrating to say the least.

This team is focused, and I have serious doubts that they will be able to be stopped this season. Coach Pete has done a great job of preparing them, but they themselves are in tunnel-vision mode and are not coming out of it. It's scary for other teams so see this freight train coming your way. I heard a quote the other day; "The Boise State Broncos are like a Fargo, North Dakota winter. You know they're coming, but that information does nothing for you." I like it.

Areas of Concern:

For once, I can honestly say that there was nothing from last night that concerns me. Nevada, be scared.

Favorite Play:

Is there anything else it could be? Kellen is about to get sacked and is in fact wrapped up by a Bulldog defensive lineman. Somehow he shakes himself out of it and proceeds to run 10 yards up the sideline before diving out of bounds just past the first down marker. It was gorgeous! Moore is by no means a running threat and he doesn't like to take off if he doesn't have to, but he made it look easy.

Thoughts and Tidbits:

There was a lot of hard hitting going on last night from both teams. In fact, I saw both Moore and Pettis go down and come up a little shaky and it scared the crap out of me. But, both are fine, obviously. This was the first time that Boise State has worn orange jerseys in what is estimated to be about 20 years. During warm ups, a group of Boise State players (probably around 30) came out onto the field bare chested. Remember, it was freezing cold and drizzling at Bronco Stadium.

Weekly Player to Watch Recap:

Winston Venable was a beast last night. I saw him flying around the field and lighting people up whenever he got the chance. I counted one sack attributed to him. But, the most important thing was how him and the rest of the defense was able to repeatedly stuff the Bulldog vaunted rushing attack. Venable was a key part of that and you can see the confidence he and the rest of the defense has. That is important when considering who the opponent is. Overall, Winston had a great game and will continue that next Friday in Reno.

Perception:

Boise State did more than plenty to continue to impress voters and critics. This was a good Fresno State team that almost upset the Nevada Wolfpack last week. The Broncos completely crushed and devoured their souls in this game. Most impressively, they were able to avoid what happened to TCU last week, barely squeaking by an opponent that they should have crushed. Boise State has a good chance to pass up the Horned Frogs in the BCS Rankings tomorrow, a week earlier than I and many others thought. Things are looking good right now. Auburn and/or Oregon just need to lose and we are looking at a non-AQ team in the National Championship game. This is for real. I never thought it would be possible, but here we are. Let's get the perspective of the vanquished Fresno State coach;

"I think the truth of the matter is, people are scared to play them. They don't want to play them. I'll say it. I have no problem saying it. I'll take Boise State against anybody in the country. What else do they have to do? They're on the verge of their fourth undefeated season in six years. You gotta be kidding me. Someday we got to wake up and say, 'We just can't listen to all the people who've got all the money. We've got to listen to people that have the best teams.' They're a great football team."

Thank you coach. Remember, this is from a man who has played anybody, anywhere, and gone up against some top teams in his coaching career. His opinion and views are respected and should be taken seriously. Here he is again;

"I've said it before," Hill said. "This is an elite football team. There's no doubt in my mind. If these guys win out, they should play for the national championship. Defensively, we've played some good teams before. We have never been manhandled like that. We got dominated tonight at the line of scrimmage. That doesn't happen to us too often...They are very deserving of playing in the title game..."

It's true. Thank you for saying it. The writer of the article that I just linked is from the ESPN writer Ivan Maisel. He finishes it by saying "They can beat anybody, too, 24 anybodies in a row. The question is whether they will get the opportunity to beat that special somebody. Based on 10 games, any championship game without Boise State wouldn't be a championship game at all." Everyone is catching on and realizing how good this team is. Well, everyone except Mark May and Craig James, but we don't care about them. The point is the Broncos are in a good position and it can only get better from here.

Alright everybody, there we have it! The most dominating performance in Boise State history is in the books. Next up we have the Nevada Wolfpack in Reno. Check back in on Monday for my WAC Weekend Recap. Go Boise State!

Weekly Player to Watch, 9th Edition

Doesn't it feel like I am running out of players to choose for my PTW? I know that's not the case, but I just can't get around it. Anyway, this week's game is between two of the best, most consistent teams in the WAC, although Fresno State hasn't won even a portion of the WAC title since 1999. Anyway, now that the Broncos have finished up the easy, cake-walk portion of their schedule, it is time to get back into it and invest everything we have as fans emotionally, mentally, and physically into the next two games. You know the boys in Blue (I guess it will be the boys in Orange for this game!) will be doing the same thing. We have reached a critical stretch in this season where one slip up will destroy everything that they have worked so hard to achieve and in effect, ruin the season for many of us. While I do not feel that the Bulldogs have what it takes to win in Bronco Stadium, let's not look forward to Nevada or we could find ourselves losing, either the game or the all-important "style points."

As I look at some numbers and stats for Fresno State this season, I realize that they rank roughly in the middle in every offensive and defensive category. They do rank 34th out of 120 teams in pass defense, but that is a bit misleading as a couple of the the squads that they have played don't pass the ball much (ie. Ole' Miss and Cal Poly). Not just that, but Hawai'i and (somehow) San Jose State were able to throw for over 300 yards against them. Offensively and as I have mentioned, they rely heavily on the running game. I expect that the Bulldogs will fall behind early and be forced to pass the ball a lot more than they want to. You all know what that means, it's time for our secondary to step up for the third week in a row. Having explained all that, please allow me to present to you my Weekly PTW...Winston Venable!

I feel like I may be copping out a little bit on this one, as Venable was the star of last year's game against Fresno State. But alas, he has not played as well this season as he did during the Fiesta Bowl run last year. Still, nothing is better than Winston going human rocket on Bulldog quarterback Ryan Colburn. The overriding purpose of choosing him is due to the fact that I would really enjoy a repeat of said game winning hit. It was beautiful. You know that Colburn is shaking in his red-colored turf cleats as we speak. Be afraid, be very afraid. I am expecting to see a whole lot of this tomorrow night;

Venable came our way after transferring from Glendale Community College in Arizona.
He was named first team J.C. All-America and first team All-Arizona whilst playing defensive back at G.C.C., registering 191 tackles in his two years there. Did you know that he was also an all-league punter for his junior college team? Why haven't we seen him doing that on The Blue? Venable was rated a 3-star recruit by Scout.com out of junior college and was only offered a scholarship to play at Boise State. Chalk that one up as a score for the Broncos! He went from a small school in Glendale to playing on one of the biggest stages in college football in that same city. Hello Fiesta Bowl!

Venable first made his mark at Boise State during his breakout game last year at Fresno State. He started off by returning an interception for a touchdown and finished by making the winning tackle towards the end of the game by knocking Ryan Colburn silly (as we have mentioned). He continued to play extremely well the rest of the season, contributing in every game. However, this season has left a lot to be desired from Winston. He barely played the season opener against Virginia Tech with leg cramps and has not been as productive as many would have thought. He did play well against Louisiana Tech a couple of weeks ago and got a great sack in against Hawai'i, but that is about it. There is a lot of potential there and I feel that he will have yet another break out game against the Bulldogs. Why? He is a nickelback (hybrid safety and linebacker) and is in there to stop the run. Guess what? Fresno State likes to run the ball. That means Venable will be in there a lot. But don't forget, he can play the pass and intercept the rock just as well. Right Andy Dalton?

Unfortunately, Winston has come under fire lately for lowering his helmet when making tackles. In no way is he a dirty player (as I have mentioned many times, mainly in a huge rant that I posted a while back). He just learned a bad habit and is trying to break it. Oregon State wide receiver and uber-midget James Rodgers caught the wrong end of one those hits while trying to block him and Jamar Taylor. It was unfortunate, but that is football. Regardless of bad habits that Winston Venable may have, he is undoubtedly one of the hardest working, aggressive, and most inspirational players on Boise State's squad. His hits and positive demeanor make him a leader on the team and also a fun player to watch. So here is to you, Mr. Venable, and another outstanding performance against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Winston Venable, our Weekly PTW!

Make sure you all enjoy the game tomorrow night at 7:30 on ESPN2! Look for me in the crowd! Also, check back in Saturday for my take on the game and what it means. Let's go Broncos!

Helmet to Helmet Injustice; From Winston Venable to Javes Lewis

As mentioned and promised yesterday, I have a bone to pick with anybody and everybody who is a fan of the two state universities in Oregon. That's right, the Ducks and the Beavers. We all know by now that Boise State's Winston Venable was suspended half a game for a helmet to helmet hit on Oregon State's James Rodgers. The WAC commissioner Karl Marx Benson said this about it; "One of the conclusions that both (experts) made on it, it was not the ball carrier. He was in a somewhat defenseless position." I will not go into how asinine this claim is because I have already done that (check it out here) and there is no use beating a dead horse with a stick. However, after viewing message boards, blogs, and articles about the hit, it is obvious that there has been nothing but hate, backlash, disdain, and idiocy coming from Oregon and Oregon State fans. They all claim that Boise State is a dirty program and that Coach Pete allows/wants his players to take cheap shots at other teams, especially if the other players are Ducks or Beavers. As ridiculous as that sounds, that's all I've read so far.

I have already said multiple times that there is no way that Winston Venable's hit was a cheap shot, nor was he purposely trying to injure Rodgers. In fact, he was very much making a play on the quarterback and Rodgers was trying to block both Venable and Jamar Taylor at the same time. The result was unfortunate, but that is football. Now, he sure shouldn't be leading with his head like that, which is a bad habit of his. In no way was it intentional or can it be defined as "targeting." In fact, that exact play happens constantly throughout every single football game that is played, both NFL and collegiate. Like I said, it's part of the game. But that doesn't stop fans of other teams from claiming Venable is a dirty player. Here is the hit in question. Take a look at it yourself.

A BYU blog called "Vanquish the Foe" suggested that Venable purposely changed his course of direction in order to go after Rodgers. Trust me, I have already lit into the tools who wrote that garbage.

The reason I bring this up again is this: Saturday night in Eugene, Oregon, the Stanford Cardinal came up to challenge the Oregon Ducks in an ABC prime time game(just like BSU vs. OSU was last week). In the third quarter, Stanford QB Andrew Luck completed a short pass to star wide receiver Chris Owusu. Owusu proceeded up field, as the first down marker was only 3 or 4 yards away. While he was being tackled by an Oregon player, Javes Lewis came in, full speed, helmet down, and contacted Owusu right in the side/top of his helmet. The receiver was out and laid on the ground for a good three minutes without moving before he was able to get up and go to the sideline. Check it out here, fast forward to just before minute mark 1:07 and again at 1:34 (for a closer look).

Look at this play and hit in question and see the similarities with the Winston Venable play. There are things in common. Both athletes were trying to make a play on the ball carrier, there were other people involved trying to make plays as well, Venable and Lewis both led with their heads, and there were injuries sustained by those who were hit. Very similar indeed, but with different reactions from the media and fans.

What is a defenseless player and what is targeting one? According to the 2009-10 NCAA Football Rule Book, this is the definition of leading with your helmet and targeting a defenseless player:

"No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with
the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul."

and

"No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent
above the shoulders. When in question, it is a foul."

After viewing and pondering on both videos and hits, let me ask a question; Which one is a defenseless player? Is it the one attempting to block an oncoming defender, or is it the one who is already being tackled and close to being on the ground? The question is indeed rhetorical. Owusu is clearly a defenseless player. If he is already being tackled and going to the ground, why does Lewis have to run in and get one last shot in? In my opinion and it what seems to be obvious, Owusu was being targeted by Javes Lewis, who initiated contact with the crown of his helmet. The result was an injured player, just like James Rodgers (again, who was setting a block, and was not defenseless) was after the Venable hit.

Where is the outrage? Where are all the claims that Oregon is a dirty team filled with players who take cheap shots? Where are all the Oregon State and Oregon fans (why don't we throw BYU in as well) calling out their own teams? Why aren't the blogs and message boards blowing up with angry fans demanding justice in the form of a suspension for Lewis? I don't have an answer. I am baffled. It seems that the more the Broncos win, the more hate comes their way. My point is that the type of play for which Winston Venable got suspended occurs in every game. It happened in the Oregon/Stanford game, and Owusu was by far more defenseless than James Rodgers was. What is different is the way it is viewed, according to the perception or success of the team in question. It sure isn't fair, but then again top college football is played and judged in an unfair system. I hate complainers, but something needs to change. The BCS might take years to reform or fall, but we can at least be fair and consistent in the officiating and treatment of teams. Then again, as crazed as football fans get, neither change looks promising or imminent. Like your momma said, life isn't fair.

1 Really Hard Hit = 2 Quarters on the Bench, Happy Trails to DJ Harper

As I mentioned yesterday, Winston Venable's hit on Oregon State wide receiver James Rodgers was under review to determine whether or not he will be suspended. Well Karl Marx Benson, the WAC commissioner, in a moment of pure egotistical retribution against Boise State, dropped the hammer today and suspended Venable for the New Mexico State game on Saturday. Boise State appealed it and the suspension was reduced to the first 2 quarters. Read the story here on idahostatesman.com. What are your thoughts?

My first thought is this: what a load of crap! I won't get into it like I did yesterday other than to mention that this is pure payback for the Broncos leaving his conference. Watch out Nevada and Fresno State, you guys are next! Like I said, he has now set a precedent where players from every team should be getting suspended every game for similar hits. In no way was James Rodgers a defenseless player. He was setting a block and was at a weird angle and height when Venable came full speed trying to get to the quarterback. This is absolutely ridiculous. I cannot express in PG-suitable words how idiotic this decision was from Benson. Another point; what does a half a game suspension do. It is as pointless as it is laughable. Way to get the job done Benson. Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman wrote the blog link above about the suspension. He mentions, "Benson, after consulting with two NCAA rules and officiating experts, decided to suspend Venable for a game." All I can say is that if these "experts" were anything like the actual officials that reffed the game on Saturday, I can see how they came up with the suspension. What a bunch of moronic crocks! We cannot leave for the Mountain West soon enough.

We will miss this guy...for 2 quarters.

As my "Weekly PTW" curse continues, we found out yesterday that running back DJ Harper has torn his ACL again. I say again because it is the same one he had surgery on to repair last year. Again, this was three games in, just as it was last season. Harper will appeal to the NCAA to grant him a sixth year of eligibility. The sixth year is very elusive, but he may have a good case here. I wish Harper the best of luck and really hope that he is able to get the extra year. Poor guy. Bronco Nation loves you DJ! Don't ever forget it! We will be seeing a lot more carries for Doug Martin, a lot more of Jeremy Avery, and more of Matt Kaiserman. It's a good thing the Broncos are deep at running back. Good luck Harper!

We will miss this guy for the whole season. We won't be seeing this on Saturday.

Winston Venable sounds like a British name, and he plays football really violently

There has been endless reaction to the hit that knocked James Rodgers out of the game for Oregon State last Saturday. The WAC is reviewing the hit to determine whether or not to suspend Boise State's Winston Venable for it. I was putting around the blog world and I found this little ditty from "Vanquish the Foe," a BYU fan blog. Look at number nine when this tool says: "I thought the cheap shot on Fuga was disgusting (not as disgusting as the #17 Boise player cheap shotting James Rodgers tonight - watch that tape and see #17 ignore the guy with the ball, turn away and just drill his helmet into OSU's star player - I hate Boise)" This guy is absolutely clueless! I posted a comment on his blog and we will see if I get a response. If I do, I will be sure to share it.

First of all, watch the hit. It is in this link on a video recap of the entire game. Number one, Venable is very aggressive, sometime overly aggressive. But knowing him personally (I had some classes with him at Boise State), there is nothing rude or hurtful in the guy. Being as aggressive as he is, he was just trying to make a play on the scrambling Ryan Katz. As unfortunate as the result/aftermath of the hit was, it is football. Rodgers was standing still, turned sideways from Venable as he was trying to block both Venable and Jamar Taylor. You see Rodgers dip his shoulders and head as Venable comes flying in. It was clearly helmet to helmet contact, but if both players have their heads down then who is at fault? With Rodgers standing still and Venable going 15 yards at full sprint speed, what do you expect? Rodgers is a small guy as it is and just found himself in the path of Winston Venable. Like I said here and in a previous post, I wish the best to James Rodgers and his family. I hope he recovers fully and there are no lasting effects. Unfortunately this is just part of football.

If the WAC decides to suspend Venable, they will have made a huge mistake. They will have set a precedent where 6 or 7 people from every team that plays should get suspended every week. To me it is absurd. I know I am a little biased, but plays like this happen all the time when defenders are trying to make a tackle. If Rodgers had not gotten hurt, we would not be having this discussion. Like I said, I think it was all a microcosm of a hard running, aggressive Winston Venable, an already small receiver trying to lay a block who happened to bend down to an unfortunate height and angle, and the unwanted outcome of an injured player. These things combined may get Venable suspended against New Mexico State (not that we will need him against the Aggies).

But this discussion brings up a topic that I must bring up; Winston Venable's name. It's freaking awesome! Doesn't it sounds like he should be British? In fact, the meaning of the name Winston is of English origin meaning "joy stone" (see here, on a baby name meaning website). It has to be the coolest name on Boise State's roster. He comes from an athletic family. Winston's brother Will (didn't get the cool name in the family) plays outfield for the San Diego Padres. Will also played basketball at Princeton University, so he is smart and athletic! Will and Winston's father, Max, was also a Major League Baseball outfielder for 4 teams during his 12-year career. So there you go.

Seriously, just try saying it with a British accent: Winston Venable!

Sealing the Fiesta Bowl win for the Broncos with an interception. Look how high he jumped!

Just a sweet video!

So I was doing some messing around on Youtube and I discovered this little diddy. This was the actual video played on the big screen at the 2010 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl before the Broncos ran out onto the field. It is short, but it brings back a lot of really memories. I was at every single home game this last year and watched the rest on TV. I was also present in Glendale for this one. By far the most amazing thing I have experienced sports wise in my life. The feeling of complete elation and letting myself get out of control when Winston Venable made that last interception is only eclipsed by the birth of my son. So seeing this video makes me remember everything all over again. TCU is a great team and I am really looking forward to seeing them play this coming season, plus they beat Boise State the year before in the Poinsettia Bowl so the victory on a bigger stage was even sweeter. Anyway, enjoy and get ready for more starting September 6th in Landover, Maryland!
