As you all know, the Western Athletic Conference handed out their season awards on Monday, and the Boise State Broncos made off like bandits with 11 total players on the first team and 3 on the second team. I thought that whoever makes the decisions on first team, second team, etc. did a really good job. However, there are a couple of changes that I personally would have made, including the awards for Player(s) of the Year. Here is the list of who won what. I will follow that up with what I would have done differently.

There we have it. Like I mentioned, I have no problem with most of what was decided. With that said, here are a few changes that I would have made.
1. Defensive Player of the Year, how in the world could it be anybody besides Dontay Moch of Nevada? It's ridiculous! I don't want to take anything away from Chris Carter. After all, he did have a great season. But Moch single-handedly won the award in when Boise State played them in Reno. That man is a holy terror and a yeti-beast! He should have won it.
2. Offensive Player of the Year. This on is a bit tricky. Kellen Moore is the better player and is going to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation. But Kaepernick beat him head to head. I guess it feels a little bit like a cop out by the WAC, but I guess there wasn't much else they could have done. I would almost lean towards giving it to the senior. Kellen has another year to get another one.
3. Billy Winn. He should have been first team all WAC. That man has been huge for the Broncos, clogging up the middle and wreaking havoc on quarterbacks. I would take Logan Harrell off of the first team and put Winn there. At least Billy didn't get completely shafted like this next player was.
4. Will Lawrence. The Boise State senior offensive lineman has had a stellar season. Not just that, but he has strung together 2 or 3 of them in a row now. How he was left completely off both the first and second team is beyond me. I would put him probably on the second team in place of Ailao Eliapo from San Jose State.
5. Punter. Hawai'i's Alex Dunnachie got shafted. He should have been on at least the second team. I was in person at Bronco Stadium when Dunnachie got off plenty of booming, amazing punts. He should have been mentioned here.
6. I was somewhat surprised to see Winterswyk and George Iloka on the first team. Both are great players, but haven't had stand out years like we were expecting. I guess Winterswyk is in because of his track record. As far as Iloka, maybe there was no one else worthy of it. He did pick up his game towards the end of the regular season (remember the balancing act/interception against Nevada? Beautiful.).

Broncos Destroy Overmatched Vandals-The Streak Hits 12
The game turned out just about the way everyone expected it to. It was blow out city from the start! Chris Potter's 76 yard punt return set the tone for a first quarter that yielded 28 points for Boise State, and they never looked back. The Vandals' points came in the second half. One touchdown was a pass from Nathan Enderle to Eric Greenwood, and the second a garbage time fumble by Bronco back up Joe Southwick that was pounced on in the end zone by Idaho. Most things went really well for the Broncos, and very little went well for the Vandals. Let's take a look at some stats and then analyze the game from my perspective.

As you can see, Boise State outgained Idaho in total yards, but not by as much as you would have expected, especially in the rushing game. It's a little deceiving because Kellen Moore and most of the starters did not play past 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, and the second and third team did not play all that well (note: Idaho kept their starters in long after that). So basically, the Vandals were able to gain pointless yards against Boise State's back ups that netted no points for them. That skews the amount of total yards that Idaho racked up. Also, the Vandals ran two fake punts that accounted for 93 of their rushing yards. Give them credit for executing them, but besides that they had 8 yards on the ground. As for the passing game, Moore had a good night in his 2 1/2 quarters of play. Enderle (who was intercepted twice) and Brian Reader (intercepted once) combined for 54 pass attempts, only completing 28 of them, on their way to gaining 215 yards. That is a lot of passes to get that small amount of yardage. It was not an efficient night for the Vandal quarterbacks to say the least. it was nice to see Boise State keep their penalties to a minimum, while Idaho committed nearly twice as many. The turnovers were important for Boise State. Brandyn Thompson grabbed two picks last night, one from each quarterback. Finally, the Broncos only got 4 sacks, as opposed to the seven they had against Hawai'i last week. It was still a great showing. Idaho's sacks both came late in the game against the Broncos' back ups.
What We Learned:
Coach Pete does not waiver from his stance. He will not run up the score no matter who the opponent is. It was great to see him stick to his guns even though the rest of us wanted him to allow Kellen to throw 3 or 4 more touchdown passes against our hated (crappy) rival. I guess it was a good thing that Pete pulled Moore, as Shiloh Keo was just waiting to get a cheap shot in, which he did against Michael Coughlin. Speaking of that;
Shiloh Keo is a complete douche bag. Did you see that idiot blatantly head hunt the quarterback when Coughlin scrambled towards the sideline? I was pissed and so were many (all) Bronco players and fans. The worst part was Keo got up and looked at the ref like he had done nothing wrong. I hope someone goes Jojo Dickson on Keo next game and knocks that loser out for good.
The Vandal starters can score on Boise State's second and third team. Congratulations. But don't get confused, their offense couldn't do anything last night. It was a fumble in the end zone that got them their score. Nice work Idaho, have fun next year and the year after in the gutted WAC. I am not sad to see us go.
Chris Potter is a great punt returner. I'm starting to like this kid more and more. He reminds me a lot of Vinny Perretta. I hope the coaches keep using him in the wildcat formations and letting him pass every now and then. Also, it was great to see a punt returned for a touchdown. That hasn't happened for the Broncos since Kyle Wilson did it in 2008.
Idaho's defense played really hard, as Rod Gilmore and Rob Tessitore pointed out about 5 times during the game. That was getting really annoying. Plus, as hard as they played, they looked ridiculous out there getting burned by Titus and dissected by Kellen. I know you have to find things to talk about during a blowout, but building up a team that is getting taken to the woodshed is not the best way to go.
It turns out, Boise State's secondary can catch passes! Doesn't it feel like it has been forever since we had an interception? Well we had three last night. Idaho's quarterbacks sucking + Brandyn Thompson lurking in the secondary = INT! Good times...
Areas of Concern:

He has fumbled 2 or 3 times this year. That is something that he will work on more as he gets ready to be the starter after next season. Special teams. Doug Martin was at it again, lighting up chumps and knocking out fools! His first touchdown run was finished by trucking d-bag Shiloh Keo right in the freaking mouth and bull-dozing him into the end zone. It was beautiful! No videos of it have been posted, but I will keep searching for one to post. I am getting all giddy just thinking about it!
Thoughts and Tidbits:
The Vandals' quarterback Nathan Enderle is supposed to be an NFL prospect. He may be tall, but that tool cannot throw a decent ball. It doesn't help when this is happening to him on a consistent basis;
All I am saying is I am not sold on him. Idaho fans spelled out "nasty and inebriated" on their chests. It was hilarious. I was watching Sportscenter the other day and they were talking about the Miami Heat. They showed a video of their head coach, and right behind him was a lady wearing a Boise State T-shirt! You have to see it! Here is the video, fast forward to the 20 second mark. Remember, this is in Miami, Florida at an NBA basketball game! Amazing!
Anyway, I wonder if Mr. Enderle remembers seeing some blue and orange last night? He did not look like he was having very much fun.
Weekly Player to Watch Recap:
Billy Winn was his normal self last night, which is a complete beast. I counted 2 sacks from him. But it wasn't just that; he and his defensive line buddies were harassing Enderle all game, making his life absolutely miserable. It looks like I picked a good one for my Weekly PTW! Let's hope I can continue that next week when the Broncos take on Fresno State at home.
Perception:
I have mentioned that the yards and stats are a little deceiving for this game. It is a good thing that it was broadcasted on ESPN2 so that voters, fans, and the general public were all able to see how dominant Boise State truly was. There is a lot of ground to make up between the Broncos and TCU. But three consecutive Friday night prime time games will help a lot. Boise State cannot afford to be hidden when they play. Fresno State and Nevada are big games and will go a long way in proving to the voters (who in a ridiculous knee-jerk reaction) pegged the Horned Frogs above Boise State after they beat Utah last week. I don't know if it is possible to jump back over the Frogs, but it is worth trying. With all the controversy surrounding Cam Newton, the Broncos could benefit greatly. Plus I think Auburn will lose before the season is over. If it's not today against Georgia, then Alabama will take care of them in the Iron Bowl. Overall, Boise State's win over Idaho will not hurt the Broncos, and hopefully it will help when coupled with the next few games.

Weekly Player to Watch, 8th Edition
As the eve of the final rivalry game descends upon us, we are left with a few questions that must be answered. How many sacks will the Broncos get on Enderle? Can Boise State finally force a turnover, and hopefully an interception? Why does the Kibbie Dome smell like urine? The point is, this game is going to be a blow out. The Vandals may get a few small jabs in during the fight, but Boise State is going to overpower them in every way possible and make it a 3 hour nightmare for them. If Idaho had a decent team last year and lost 63-25, what do you think is going to happen when they bring this bad team into the contest? What is your prediction? To quote the immortal words of Clubber Lang in Rocky III, "My prediction...PAIN!" Bronco Chase's Weekly PTW will be the proprietor of pain and wreak God-like vengeance upon the hapless Vandals for thinking they have a shot at winning.
90% of Idaho's problems this year can be attributed to the poor play of their offensive line. A bulk of Enderle's interceptions are from having to get rid of the ball too early because defenders are shoving their helmets into his gut. This does not look good for the Vandal's, as the clear strength of the Boise State defense has been their lineman. Uh oh...Enderle will be bleeding by the time the game's over. With that said, there is one man who is going to bring it hot and heavy right at the Vandal quarterback. This week's PTW is...Billy Winn!
Did you know that Idaho ranks 116th out of 120 teams in the nation in rushing the ball? If you thought Hawai'i was one dimensional, wait until you get a look at the Vandals. Part of that is they don't have any good running backs, and the other part is that their offensive line blows (as we have already mentioned). Although his production is very low, has clearly been a massive disappointment after a decent freshman year, and will probably get held to negative rushing yards today, Vandal/loser Deonte Jackson decided to stir the pot, calling BSU president Bob Kustra a "blue and orange snot." Well there we have even more motivation for Billy Winn and co. to violently stuff Jackson every time he touches the ball. My point is Idaho is going to pass the ball a lot, especially since they are going to be down by a lot of points. Winn is going to hammer Enderle to the smelly turf in the Kibbie Dome time after time. In fact, I would not be surprised to see him in the backfield quick enough to be able to grab a hand off and force a fumble or two. Enderle will be screaming in terror. Wouldn't you? FIST!!!!!
Before his days of sporting the meanest, most terrifying mohawk in the history of mankind, Billy Winn was lighting up fools on a football in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a senior, Winn was named the Sunrise League Defensive Player of the Year as well as being named first team All-State and All-League after registering 18 sacks and 3 forced fumbles from the defensive end position. At Boise State, he plays nose tackle and has yet to meet an offensive lineman that can contain him. He was the most sought after player in Nevada during the 2007 recruiting season. Billy Winn had offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona State, UNLV, and Texas Tech. That's pretty amazing in itself, number one, and even more so that Coach Pete and his assistants were able to get him onto The Blue. He has been paying dividends ever since. On a related note, Winn is a big man and is not afraid to show you.
Billy had 8.5 in his two years at Boise State coming into this season. His stats have not been updated to tell us how many he has this year, but I would assume that there are a few. My favorite play of his so far happened against Oregon last year at Bronco Stadium. Masoli handed off to loser/criminal LeGarrette Blount when the Ducks were pinned back deep in their own territory. At roughly the same same time the ball was handed off, Winn was there to drive Blount into the orange turf in the end zone, registering a safety and establishing the Broncos' defensive dominance that would hover over Oregon throughout the entire game.
Needless to say that anybody wearing anything close to Idaho colors tonight better have their head on a swivel, because mean Billy Winn will be coming for you. That may or may not include the losers in the stands who support that dumpster fire of a football team. Just ask this poor fool how it feels to be leveled by Mr. Winn, who is this week's (terrifying) PTW!
I wish I knew what it feels like to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Billy Winn does. In fact, he is the only one in this shot to have his helmet off. Good lookin' out Billy!

Winn is going to hammer Enderle to the smelly turf in the Kibbie Dome time after time. In fact, I would not be surprised to see him in the backfield quick enough to be able to grab a hand off and force a fumble or two. Enderle will be screaming in terror. Wouldn't you? FIST!!!!!
Before his days of sporting the meanest, most terrifying mohawk in the history of mankind, Billy Winn was lighting up fools on a football in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a senior, Winn was named the Sunrise League Defensive Player of the Year as well as being named first team All-State and All-League after registering 18 sacks and 3 forced fumbles from the defensive end position. At Boise State, he plays nose tackle and has yet to meet an offensive lineman that can contain him. He was the most sought after player in Nevada during the 2007 recruiting season. Billy Winn had offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona State, UNLV, and Texas Tech. That's pretty amazing in itself, number one, and even more so that Coach Pete and his assistants were able to get him onto The Blue. He has been paying dividends ever since. On a related note, Winn is a big man and is not afraid to show you.
Billy had 8.5 in his two years at Boise State coming into this season. His stats have not been updated to tell us how many he has this year, but I would assume that there are a few. My favorite play of his so far happened against Oregon last year at Bronco Stadium. Masoli handed off to loser/criminal LeGarrette Blount when the Ducks were pinned back deep in their own territory. At roughly the same same time the ball was handed off, Winn was there to drive Blount into the orange turf in the end zone, registering a safety and establishing the Broncos' defensive dominance that would hover over Oregon throughout the entire game.
Needless to say that anybody wearing anything close to Idaho colors tonight better have their head on a swivel, because mean Billy Winn will be coming for you. That may or may not include the losers in the stands who support that dumpster fire of a football team. Just ask this poor fool how it feels to be leveled by Mr. Winn, who is this week's (terrifying) PTW!
I wish I knew what it feels like to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Billy Winn does. In fact, he is the only one in this shot to have his helmet off. Good lookin' out Billy!

Weekly Player to Watch, 7th Edition
Here we have the biggest game of the season since Virginia Tech. Nobody saw this one coming, as the Rainbow Warriors were picked to finish toward the bottom of the WAC. Yet here we are, over-analyzing the crap out of the game in every way possible (including me!). I posted my picks yesterday, including a couple of extras. The highlight of the out of conference picks has to be Utah vs. TCU. That will be the one to keep your eyes on. I would imagine that they will be announcing that score throughout the Broncos’ game. I will let you know…Anyway, let’s get started with the Weekly PTW.
It has been a weird couple of weeks with the Tuesday night game and nothing to post about the Broncos for the weekends. It feels good to get back into the normal routine and schedule. That means back to normal Weekend Picks, PTW, and a feeling of complete normalcy with me. With that said, this week’s PTW is…Ryan Winterswyk!
Hawai’i passes the ball a lot. In fact, the only game where they have even tried to rush consistently was at Utah State. Alex Green went for 172 yards, and Moniz still ended up with 389 through the air. I think that even if they try to run against Boise State, Green will get swallowed up and most likely injured by the beasts on the D-Line. I took this into account when picking my PTW. I cannot help but get the images of two years ago out of my head. Hawai’i was on The Blue and their offensive line could not hold water in a bucket. Snap after snap the Broncos were in the backfield harassing whichever quarterback was there (they used a couple, if I remember correctly). This forced some poor throws and led to 3 Brandyn Thompson interceptions. Well guess what, this Bronco defensive line is the best they have ever had, and possibly the best in the nation. I see much of the same happening tomorrow. Bryant Moniz is in trouble. Just ask Andy Dalton.
Ryan Winterswyk is a senior from La Habra, California where he played safety (?). He was named All-state, All-CIF, All-Freeway League, league defensive MVP and team MVP, and finished his senior season with 150 tackles, two interceptions and three touchdowns. Surprisingly, he was not recruited by any big (or even small schools) and decided to walk on at Boise State. At 6’4” he was a little tall to stay at safety. The coaches decided to bulk him up and stick him at defensive end. Now he is an all-WAC performer and even found a place on the all-WAC decade team after his junior year. Those are pretty high honors for a man who has not graduated yet. But then again, he also found his way onto the cover of Sports Illustrated.
I know that ‘Swyk has not recorded a sack yet and a large part of that is due to the fact that he is getting double teamed basically all game. That in itself is important. It has left Shea McClellin, Chase Baker, and Billy Winn to terrorize quarterbacks and running backs alike. Now you have offensive coordinators and head coaches guessing who to double team and trying short, quick passes so as to not allow sacks. As much as the Rainbow Warriors pass, there are bound to be multiple sack and hurry opportunities. Winterswyk will be left one-on-one so as to double team McClellin, Winn, or Baker and ‘Swyk will get the sack. There is just too much talent across the line for the front four to always double team him. Even though Hawai’i’s offensive line has been playing well, Boise State should be able to get plenty of pressure. Bryant Moniz, it’s time to get Swyked!

Broncos Beat Beavers!
If you watched the Boise State Broncos home opener against the Oregon State Beavers, you saw a great football team make mistakes that almost cost them the game. But at the same time, it never really felt like the outcome was in doubt. If you did not see it, then join me in this next part. Let's all just pretend that we didn't see it and we don't know how it ended. I will show some stats from the game. Look at them, act as if you don't know the final score, and guess who won. Ready? Here we go:

It sure looks like it was a complete shellacking that Boise State bestowed upon a crappy Beaver team. In many ways this was true. The final score was 37 to 24 in favor of the Broncos. But why did I leave the stadium with what I can only describe as a sour taste in my mouth? It is because the third quarter was really rough on fans of the Broncos. Bad special teams play (mainly Titus Young fumbling a punt that gave Oregon State fantastic field position) and some really terrible penalties nearly derailed everything Boise State had worked for. In fact, 17 points that Oregon State scored were directly related to miscues by Boise State's special teams. It's tough because the defense played so well and the points allowed by special teams will be put on them. It was definitely hard to watch for a while. Oregon State did what they needed to do; play well on special teams, keep it close, and don't be intimidated. But still, it wasn't enough.
What We Learned:
-Kellen Moore should just be given the Heisman Trophy now. Well, at least be extended an invite to New York for the trophy presentation right now. In a night where mistakes, nerves, hype, and emotions took its toll on the Broncos, Moore was as cool as a cucumber. He went 19 for 27 with 288 yards and 3 touchdowns. Every time Boise State needed a score to hold the Beavers at bay, Kellen delivered. It also helps a lot that he has some talented receivers to throw the ball to.
-Mike Riley is a really freaking good coach! Not only did he have his players prepared and ready for the game, the environment, and the competition, but he had his guys in it mentally. Oregon State was not intimidated or scared to play in Bronco Stadium. Through the noise, the pressure, and a lack of respect, Riley and his crew were up to the task. They may have been outmatched in just about every facet of the contest, but he did what he could to keep it close, and it almost worked. Mike Riley; one of the top ten coaches in the nation. Take it to the bank.
-Boise State's run defense deserves all the hype it got, and then some. The combination of Billy Winn, Shea McClellin, Chase Baker, Ryan Winterswyk, Tyrone Crawford, and co. absolutely man-handled Jacquizz Rodgers. They held him to a career low 46 yards on 18 carries. That is absolutely unheard of! Quizz never got going. All I can say to finish this off is; watch out Colin "Bird Leg" Kaepernick and Vai Taua. The Broncos D-line is really big and really good.
-Doug Martin is a beast and eats children for dinner. OK, maybe just steak. But Coach Pete went to him in the fourth quarter to eat up clock and gain yardage. That is precisely what he did. On their final drive that netted a Kyle Brotzman field goal, Martin gained 61 of the team's 67 yards. Yards after contact are his specialty and he had plenty. Tons of credit to the offensive line and Dan Paul for blocking perfectly for Doug. They don't call him the Muscle Hamster for nothing.

Penalties, again. The Broncos cut down on the number of them, but the ones they did have came at really inopportune moments. On one particular drive the defense had two fifteen yarders that kept the Beavers' drive alive, both times after a stop on third down. There was a taunting penalty on Tyrone Crawford and a phantom unnecessary roughness call against Winston Venable (I say phantom because it didn't happen. In order for it to be unnecessary roughness you actually have to hit the guy, right? Ridiculous). Either way, Boise State needs to fix that big time. Another concern is still the secondary. I know they were playing a prevent defense and didn't give up anything deep, but they left some receivers wide open. It is still better than against Virginia Tech, but there is room for improvement. Turnovers; The Broncos need some! It is almost ridiculous that they did not force any against Oregon State. Jeron Johnson should have had an interception but mistimed the jump and it ended up as an OSU touchdown. They will need to be a lot better at forcing turnovers if they expect to do big things this season.
Favorite Play:
Although it was a catch and a first down for the Beavers, George Iloka delivered a huge snot bubbler on the OSU receiver. He went up for a high ball from Katz and was greeted with a full speed face mask in his rib cage. It was awesome! We need more of that from Iloka.
Thoughts and Tidbits:
Austin Pettis got out of the dog house and threw his first touchdown pass ever in the first quarter. It was awesome! Matt Kaiserman got into the game at running back before Jeremy Avery did. Kaiserman hasn't played since breaking his leg against Idaho last season. Brandon Thompson had a great game. He kept star wide out James Rodgers in check, limiting him to 2 catches for 11 yards. Let's hope he continues doing just this instead of reverting to his Virginia Tech "I can't tackle worth crap" self.
Maybe I should stop picking weekly PTW's. Everyone I choose gets injured. Shea McClellin last week and DJ Harper this time around. When I saw him go down after cutting to his right on that surgically repaired knee, I was like "oh crap!" He did not return to the game. He was limping a little bit on the sideline, but Coach Pete says he is fine and will play next week.
A huge part of the outcome of the game was the national perception of the Broncos. A lot of experts said they needed to win big to earn more respect. It looked good for the first half and the fourth quarter, but as mentioned, the third almost messed it up. That sour taste in my mouth and yours is our perception of the team, the game, and the public perception (yes, I said it is our perception of the public perception. Quite a quandary, huh?). What I mean by that is Bronco fans are afraid that they did not pass the test as well as they could have in the eyes of the voters and viewers. Still, beating a ranked team will bode well for the Broncos. Couple that with the fact that Virginia Tech is back in it with a shut out win at Boston College and the ship may be righting itself (please refer to a previous post where I cautioned people to not overreact when James Madison beat the Hokies). Boise State should stay put in the polls for at least one more weak. I think that even if they had blown out the Beavers, nothing would have changed. Boise State still needs chaos to reign down on college football in order for them to get to the National Championship game. There is still a lot of season to play. Overall, I think that in the end a win is a win and the Broncos need to keep taking care of business. Oregon State has got to be the best 1-2 team in the country.
